Manfrotto 725B vs Manfrotto 7302YB

I’ve just purchased another small tripod to use for my flash/umbrella setup. The tripod in question is a Manfrotto 7302YB, which I’ve read replaces the 725B.

There’s basically not much to differentiate between them.

Handling

The red handle is far easier to open than the new black one. Other than that they’re basically the same.

I’ll admit I’ve never used the 725B to handle any loads bigger than a flash+umbrella combination so I can’t say how well it grips. I’ve got bigger tripod for camera work.

Conclusion

If I could have found another 725B I would have bought one of those instead. Oh well. 150€ for a flash tripod isn’t going to kill me. It’s far smarter than using a chair to put the flash on…

Ubuntu’s Alsa is just a wee bit too old. The weird chip, IDT 92HD75B2X5, on the Intel HDA card doesn’t work with 1.0.18.

An upgrade to 1.0.19 is required so run the following as root:

Should work after that. Note that the single left speaker is almost useless, use headphones. Why did they even put it in there?

Works out of the box but needs closed-source Broadcom drivers. Terrible.

Has one but I’ve never used it, nor do I care about it.

Packard Bell MH

Here follows a very quick review of the Packard Bell MH36-V-750NCD. I only had a few hours to reinstall Windows on it.

Appearance

Standard 15.4″ laptop. The case is shiny (when new).

I didn’t have time to remove the plastic from around the monitor. The round trackpack feels weird.

I found the keyboard hard to use. My hands were always unaligned and the keypad confused my fingers.

The round trackpack with its weird sensation and hard-to-press buttons. The decals I removed pretty quickly.

All the plastic on the thing is extremely prone to fingerprints. Scaringly so.

CPU fan

Only time I hear it is when the laptop is rebooting. After that it becomes quiet. Probably goes on vacation somewhere, since I doubt it’s actually needed here.

Summary

It cost about $625 and it came with a dualcore, 4gb of ram and 250gb of harddrive space. That’s great. My first PC was an 8086 @ 12mhz …

It seems Linux-friendly enough, not that I can imagine why one would want a webcam and shit like that. The weird keyboard and weird trackpad would keep me from buying this laptop myself, though. Can’t really say it’d make a good work machine.

Toshiba Satellite L350

Toshiba Satellite L350 PSLD8E-003009N5. Not entirely unpalatable but with a quirk or two.

Appearance

Looks like a 17″ laptop. Silvery on the outside and black on the inside.

Almost full-sized keyboard. With a keypad, even! Nothing to comment about here – the insert/home/end/pgup/pgdn keys could have been placed more to the left instead of the bullshit, useless scroll lock but otherwise no big complaints.

The left side has a VGA out (again?), CPU fan, network connector, two USB and a PCMCIA socket. I’ve tested two copies of this laptop. On the one the fan is almost always quiet – spinning but quiet. On the other the fan sometimes decides to spin up to full speed and won’t come down again until a reset. Both laptops were laying next to each other on the same table and none of them was doing anything of interest. Weird.

The right side has one USB, DVD ram, power connector and a keylock thing. Does anyone even use that lock thing?

The control is to the far left of the keyboard – correct behavior.

The front gives us a bunch of LEDs, a physical WLAN switch, microphone and headphone jack and a volume control (which works off the bat).

Above the keyboard is a power switch and some hotkeys which I’ve neither tested nor used.

Components

Wlan and audio worked with a vanilla 8.10 liveCD. Nothing weird to report.

Notice that the wlan is a usb device…

Haven’t tested the headphone jack but I’ll go ahead and assume it works just as the shitty speakers work.

Sometimes the volume control doesn’t work. Probably just some acpid bug that’ll go away with time.

Haven’t tested VGA output or suspend or whatever. Not my cup of tea. I guess I treat laptops like I treat desktop boxes, and I don’t switch off desktops.

CPU fan

I’m unimpressed with the sheer loudness the CPU fan is capable of. Why is it even spinning up like that on the one laptop? Quality control issues?

Summary

Large laptop that can still be carried around, albeit in a rather large case. The keyboard is nice, the monitor has unimpressive resolution for its size and the cpu fan on the one laptop worries me.

Acceptable, but not much more.

The laptop is small, quiet, cheap and yet powerful. The keyboard is wonderful to work with (for a 12″) and there is Linux support for all the components. Buy yourself an extra mouse and you’re good to go.

Appearance

It’s a 12″, shiny, black, plastic laptop. The Acer logo shines white when the machine is turned on.

On the left side is the VGA output, dock connector, eth, 1xusb and the Expresscard slot. Why they’re still making things with VGA outputs I don’t understand. Hasn’t DVI been standard for a few years? The dock connector probably connects to an expensive piece of Acer hardware that I have no interest in purchasing.

The right side has 1xusb, a dvd burner, 1xusb, a modem connector and the power connector. Modem? 2009?

The control key is to the far left of the keyboard, as it should be. The keyboard is pleasant and natural to work on. It’s not a fullsized Model-M but good enough for a 12″ laptop.

The only two hotkeys which I understand are the wlan and Bluetooth buttons. The wlan has no on/off indicator. Neither does the Bluetooth but at least Linux detects that it’s either on or off. If you mistakenly switch off the wlan you’ll still see networks but you won’t be able to connect.

The trackpad I avoid as much as possible (as usual) although there is nothing really wrong with it.

Components

Audio

Audio was detected automatically. Output to the speakers, which are of acceptable quality, and headphone jack are controlled separately: the speakers use the front control and the headphones use the surround.

The volume control knob controls the master volume.

wlan

The wlan needed the latest drivers from the kernel wireless site, after which it worked fine.

CPU fan

The fan is rarely ever on and when it is it’s pretty quiet.

Webcam

Works just fine. Can’t figure out why anyone would want one… I used V4L2, via VLC, to view the webcam.
